Nespresso D290 Concept automatic Coffee-and-Espresso appliance with Aeroccino Milk Frother
is an entry level appliance in the group of pod/capsule machines that have built in milk frothing nozzles.
-"The Nespresso machines produce 1-4oz of coffee at a time. That's not a mug or travel cup, but a small, strong, but very drinkable brew. I state this because I have read reviews of pod machines that drag them into the ground because they don't make quarts of coffee at a time. This is an espresso producing machine, not the local 7-11."
Coffee Machine Summary

Set-Up
The overall concensus here is that set-up of the Nesspresso D290 is very simple right out of the box in spite of the fact that the directions included in the box could be better. Opinions vary from, "so simple a 5-year old could do it", to, "I had to get my neighbor to help me with it". So, like a lot of appliances, it probably has more to do with your mechanical proclivity than any actual degree of difficulty inherent in the Nespresso D290.
You could always get your 5-year old neighbor to assist you.
Taste/Quality
In not one outline of this appliance did anyone have anything negative to say about the superiority of the brew produced with this appliance. That says a lot about both the grade of the grounds used in the pods and the consistency of the mix.
-"I was afraid the pre-measured portions of coffee would taste canned, but they have excellent flavor."
-"The espresso, lungo, and decaf it produces are of excellent quality."
-"...the espresso and cappuccino taste just like they do in Italy."
-"...so consistent that I managed to get a near-perfect espresso shot out of it every time."
Coffee Pods
Pods for this machine can only be purchased through the Nespresso site but shipment appears to be very fast; when you need your fix, you need it now! There are 12 different flavors to choose from that come in sleeves of 10 and most consumers felt that that was variety enough. If there was anything "negative" about the pods it was voiced in comments about the amount at .50-.72 cents apiece.
Nowhere did anyone seem to take into account the comparative amount of the same product when purchased at Starbucks, the cost of gas to get there, or the speed of output and clean-up involved with this appliance.
-"The "Ristretto" pods make the best full-strength espresso and cappuccino. Even when I make "lungo" coffee, I tend to use the higher strength coffees such as "Arpeggio" since I'm not a fan of the milder types. "Decaffeinato Intenso" makes competent decaf cappuccino as well as lungo, although I wish they had an even stronger decaf. (The regular "Decaffeinato" is milder.)"
Ease of Use
Given the ease of setup that accompanies this machine you might think that it would also be a smooth appliance to operate, and you would be right! Across the board, users suggest that the machine is quick to go from 0-60, produces consistently good quality, and cleans up in a snap.
-"I turn the appliance on, wait for the solid red light to show proper heat/steam (it takes about 30 seconds), pop in a pod, and press the correct cup size for espresso or the larger "lungo." The coffee is forced through the pod and into the cup below in seconds, with a nice brown crema on top. For cappuccino or latte, you need only to then press the steam button (the machine comes with a steamer attachment), stick the tube in a cup of milk, press the lever, and watch the appliance suck up the milk and deposit it, hot and foamy, into the cup."
-"The upside is that neophytes could spend all day trying to make a better cup of espresso-or cappuccino-than the one this appliance will produce at the touch of a button."
-"You cannot control the temperature. I did find a way to get the espresso hotter - and that is to do a dry-run (no coffee pod in machine) and push the Lungo button prior to making an espresso."
Milk Frother
Apparently the Aeroccino Milk Frother works extremely well as we found nothing of a contrary humor referring to this little gem. If you like foam on your milk and smooth clean-up then you've hit pay-dirt.
-"the aeroccino is what sealed the deal. That thing froths milk perfectly everytime in about 70 seconds!"
-"the Aeroccino which is worth it's weight in gold. It will heat up and froth milk in a few seconds making it easy to make drinks."
Clean-Up
The corresponding ease of clean-up for the Nesspresso D290 was a common theme running throughout the reviews we saw. Simple, fast, automated. You can clean the machine and settle into your favorite chair with your latte quicker than you'd be able to find your car keys to head to Starbucks.
-"Clean up? A breeze. Even if you steam milk, you have only let the steamer suck in water for a few seconds and deposit it into another cup. The empty pods are tossed into an internal canister that holds ten or so. There is no tamping for preparation. No scraping the grounds out afterward. No dishwashing. It really is that uncomplicated."
-"It takes her about 2 1/2 minutes all the way through clean up."
Customer Service
evidently Nestle's doing something very right in the customer service department. We found nothing unfavorable to say about how they handled the few problems we were able to locate in reviews.
-"...the customer service is exceptional. I called, and they sent a loaner appliance overnight, with packing and a pre-paid label to send mine in for servicing. When mine was fixed a week later, I simply shipped the loaner appliance back using, again, a pre-paid label. I didn't pay a cent."
-"I called Nespresso who is great to deal with."
Price
As Grandpa used to say, "you get what you pay for". We found the usual segment of reviews grumbling about "pricey", "a bit high" etc. but not one of those reviews sent the machine back and, in fact, most of those reviewers raved about quality, consistency, etc. One reviewer rightly pointed out that the machine would well pay for itself in something less than a year depending upon how many trips you make to the local coffee bar each day. Do the math.
