Fabrics Requiring Dry Cleaning by freetreasure
Different types of fabrics are used in manufacturing people's clothes and household textiles. Interestingly, the fabric used to make a certain piece of garment can help you determine how it should be cleaned. Not all your clothes are safe to be washed in the washing machine. Some may be washed by hands while others need some dry cleaning in order to preserve its good quality and details.
There are some fabrics, garments or textiles that are not safe to even get wet with water. Such items are supposed to be dry cleaned. Some clothing pieces such as vests, over dresses and cloaks are also just for dry cleaning especially if they are made of wools, rayon, angora, nylon, acetate or blends of delicate fibers. Satin clothes and those items made of silk or cotton fabric with raised metallic thread designs also need dry cleaning. Women's taffetas should also receive dry cleaning. Upholstery fabrics and tapestries may be washed by hand but in general they should be dry cleaned. There are also some items made of silk that are labeled as non-washable, therefore they need dry cleaning. If the label is missing, it would be best to treat the garment or textile with dry cleaning method.
In caring for special fabrics, it is always helpful to be familiar with the commonly used terms of the industry to avoid confusion and misconceptions. For instance the word stain (which is a dried spill on the clothes) should not be misunderstood to have the same meaning as a spill (which is a fresh or damp stain on the garment). There are also terms referring to how clothes must be treated. For example, if the instruction said to blot the spill on the garment with a clean cloth or tissue, you should never rub the tissue on the fabric but only gently press on the fabric to remove spill.
Sometimes, a certain piece of clothing is not yet due for dry cleaning, only some flattening techniques to straighten the wrinkles. You should not use your flat iron with this. Rather, run the hot water on your shower for about 10 minutes. Remember to keep the door closed when you do this. Afterwards, hang the garment on the shower rod and let the steam or humidity inside the bathroom remove the wrinkles from the garment. You may also just use a garment steamer, if you have one, provided that you follow the instructions carefully.
Professional and home dry cleaning both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Home dry cleaning kits are great when you are conscious about your budget, but may not work well if your garment is heavily stained. Professional dry cleaning may be costly but can produce better results in cleaning your stuffs.
Professional dry cleaners and home dry cleaners must both be knowledgeable in properly caring for clothes so possible damages are prevented. Like if the garment has been dirtied with mud, it will be better to wait until the mud has completely dried off before doing anything to remove it. If you will remove the mud while it is still damp, chances are you will only worsen the stained condition of the garment. Dried mud can be gently brushed using brush with soft bristle. If the method proves inadequate to remove the stain, then special stain removers may be used.
