Shanghai Street in Hong Kong
Shanghai Street is a popular street in Hong Kong. Starting at Austin Road from the south and ending at Lai Chi Kok Road towards the north, Shanghai Street lies parallel to avenues such as Reclamation Street, Nathan Road and Temple Street.
Shanghai Street was initially known as Station Street following the establishment of the Yau Ma Tei Police Station. Thereafter, from 12 November 1898 the street was divided in to two main areas such as Station Street South and Station Street North. However, on 19 March 1909 the whole street was officially named Shanghai Street.
Once recognised as the region’s most important commercial strip, Shanghai Street is well known for its large number of stores selling books and tools. The retail stores selling traditional Chinese wedding dresses are also a major highlight here.
Renowned as one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong, Shanghai Street is an unmatched place when it comes to purchasing kitchen equipment. There are lines of stores filled with Chinese and Western household kitchen tools as well as stores that sell products that can kit out even an entire restaurant. These kitchen products are usually sold by specialist merchants. Kitchen tools and goods available at these stores include mixers, grinders, gas rings, cleavers, various chopping boards, racks, steamer trays and so much more.
Although a majority of products on sale at the many shops along Shanghai Street display price tags, they are not fixed rates. Therefore, the consumer has the opportunity to use their bargaining skills.
Those who wish to shop at Shanghai Street will have to take the MTR in order to reach it. Visitors will have to get off at Yau Ma Tei MTR Station and walk towards Exit B and thereafter reach Exit B2 that leads to Waterloo Road. Shanghai Street is just a few steps away from Waterloo Road.
To get the most out of this unique and historic shopping street, travellers can choose to stay at any of the nearby hotels in Hong Kong. Out of the many 5 star hotels Hong Kong, Langham Place Mongkok Hong Kong stands out as an accommodation that offers a fine range of modern facilities along with professional service.
