Woodworking Projects for everyone
Wood Working Projects
Before commencing any woodworking projects always have a plan to follow. Even the most experienced craftsmen will always make sure they have a plan taped up on the wall to follow before they begin any woodworking projects.
good plan is essential whether you're building a garden shed or a chair, no matter how big or small the woodworking project you are embarking on always have a good plan.
A good plan will anticipates and eliminate most problems before they occur. For example a good plan will make sure you have each of the parts and tools required for your wood working project. This seems so obvious ,but believe me, it's so easy to overlook things when they are not written down. A good plan is crucial to your success in woodworking projects.
It's not just annoying once you discover you will need some particular screws or nails and find you haven't got them, it's also unproductive. The vital thing you should get clear in your mind is what exactly it is you are making.
Sounds obvious, but many people new to woodworking will embark on a woodworking project with no real concept of what it's they wish to make. The end result is normally a disaster that has cost three times as much as planned and taken twice as long as anticipated.
A good plan will keep you focused and be sure you only choose the materials you need for your project so there will be no waste. The plan will take into account the time needed for the project. Not to mention the costs associated with it.
Plan your woodworking project like a professional, leave absolutely nothing to chance. Include sketches within your plan with measurements;
you'll be surprised at how much easier the actual project will be when you start it. Any issues with the project should reveal themselves in the planning stage. This is better than them showing up when you are well into the project.
By getting all the sizes and measurements right at the planning stage you can save yourself a lot of time by getting the wood cut to size from the wood merchants. Once you've completed your plan the next stage is getting the wood you require.
Your plan will contain details of what type of wood you are going to use for your woodworking project. If you have bought a plan and are working from it be sure you buy the type of wood stipulated.
I have a friend who was building a wooden boat. The boat was a model of an old tramp steamer. He followed the plans for the boat religiously apart from five wooden struts that formed the skeleton on which the rest of the boat was built around.
The plan stipulated that hard wood was to be used. My friend couldn't see why it mattered and used soft wood because it was easier to manipulate. He built the boat, painted it to look like a rusty old tramp steamer. It was a work of art, a fantastic job. He still wondered why the plans had stipulated hard wood but dismissed it from his mind.
It wasn't until he came to launch the boat that he realised why hard wood was required. The shaft that drove the propeller passed through the skeleton struts. When he started the motor for the first time the soft wood struts were no match for a metal shaft revolving at 5000 rpm, the shaft cut through the softwood struts in seconds and the entire boat collapsed and broke in half.
Hours of careful work was ruined because he failed to follow the plans correctly. Wood working plans are carefully worked out so don't go changing them unless you are sure about what you are doing. Make sure you have all the tools you need for your wood working project before you start.
Don't begin any woodworking projects until you have all the necessary tools and equipment. Once you have everything you need for the woodworking project the fun can begin. You can start the project.
Make certain your work area is nice and clean, clear any residual from other projects. Pin your plan up where you can easily refer to it and begin. Any wood working project must always begin with a good plan. Taking on a project without a plan is a recipe for disaster. Always obtain a good plan to follow, whether you purchase a plan or make your own, wood working plans are the first step towards all successful woodworking projects
